  • The closing ceremony of the 6th International Training Workshop of Waste to Energy held successfully

The closing ceremony of the 6th International Training Workshop of Waste to Energy and the 4th International Symposium on Energy Utilization of Municipal Solid Waste for Sustainable Development of City was successfully held on November 1st, hosted by Zhejiang University (ZJU) and jointly organized by Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT) and International Consultant Committee of Waste to Energy (ICCWtE). The closing ceremony and symposium were hosted by Prof. Xiaodong Li from ZJU, who is chair of this workshop and ICCWtE and co-hosted by assoc. Prof. Mi Yan from ZJUT.

During the 15-days training period, 34 participants from 13 developing countries including Egypt, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand, Yemen, and Zambia harvest rich experience. The training courses included incineration technology and equipment, operation management, business model, avoidance of NIMBY issues, policies and regulations related to waste treatment and disposal, etc. Furthermore, innovative teaching modes were organized, such as the "Virtual Tour" of waste incineration plants. The workshop received great support from 4 leading waste-to-energy enterprises in China, that is, SUS Environment Co., Ltd., China Everbright Environment Group Limited, Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Co., Ltd. and China Tianying Inc. For the international symposium, the metaverse-based online immersion mode was innovatively explored, to enhance the real-time interaction between the participants. And “Metaverse Exhibition” was well organized to provide a vivid experience. The trainees participated actively and gave high praise for such an experience.

This training workshop was strongly supported by ICCWtE. The ICCWtE members including Prof. Xiaodong Li from ZJU in China, Prof. Herri Susanto from Institut Teknologi Bandung in Indonesia, Prof. Mika Horttaainen from Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology in Finland, and Assoc. Prof. Johann Fellner from Vienna University of Technology in Austria, Assoc. Prof. Mi Yan from ZJUT in China, shared their experience on the application of waste incineration technology, waste pyrolysis and gasification technology, waste recycling and carbon emissions, etc.

At the Symposium, Prof. Agamutu Pariatamby (Vice Chair of ICCWtE and the Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia), and Dr. Wichitra Singhirununsorn (ICCWtE member from the Mahasarakham University, Thailand), provided wonderful keynote speeches about the landfill gas energy source for sustainable development and biomass thermal treatment, respectively. Besides, 13 participants from different countries also made presentations related to waste management and treatment. All participants gave high recognition to this training and thought this workshop greatly help them improve their scientific and technological ability by learning Chinese experience and technology on waste-to-energy.

Since 2016, 6 International Training Workshops of Waste to Energy have been successfully held, and the corresponding international influence continues to expand. More than 150 participants from 25 developing countries in Asia, Africa and South America have been trained so far. Based on this training platform of international cooperation, the foreign trainees can have a deep understanding of the science and technology level of China. The long-term and intimate cooperation on science and technology between the developing countries are built, contributing to the realization of the rich cooperation achievements between China and different developing countries.
