From December 13 to 15, 2023, the delegation of Yangzhou Municipal Government attended the Global Urban Ecological Restoration Capacity Building Seminar and Bilateral Exchange Meeting held by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Paris, France. Mirey Atallah, Head of the Natural Climate Unit of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), presented the certificate to the city of Yangzhou. More than 50 representatives from 25 countries and regions, including city government leaders, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, and scientific research institutes, attended the meeting, and a total of 11 cities received this honor. This is another international honor for Yangzhou after winning the "World Canal Capital", "World Food Capital" and "East Asian Cultural Capital".
As an important part of the United Nations Decade Plan for Global Ecological Restoration, the "Urban Ecological Restoration" project supports the implementation of urban ecological goals related to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) for urban governance and ecological restoration. In May this year, after Yangzhou was awarded the title of the first batch of "Clean Plastic Cities" by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), it actively organized the application of the "Urban Ecological Restoration" project to the United Nations Environment Programme. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has consulted, demonstrated and reviewed the application materials of more than 250 cities around the world, and believes that Yangzhou has accumulated a wealth of practical cases in the field of urban governance and ecological restoration, especially in plastic pollution control, domestic waste classification and treatment, and ecological restoration of the area, and has the level of promotion and application to other cities around the world.
The award of the United Nations "Global Urban Ecological Restoration Model City" is an affirmation of Yangzhou's adherence to the concept of people-oriented and high-quality ecological environment to support high-quality development, and a commendation for Yangzhou's long-term efforts in urban governance and ecological restoration。
