  • Where is the waste of nucleic acid testing in China

Based on the research on the production coefficient of nucleic acid testing waste in typical nucleic acid testing institutions in Beijing, Shanghai, Xi 'an, Xiantao, Dandong, Shiyan and other cities of different sizes, the method of mixed nucleic acid sampling and testing is adopted, and about 5 tons of nucleic acid testing waste is generated for every 1 million people.

Nucleic acid testing wastes generated by different sampling sites are generally collected and disposed in different ways.  Nucleic acid testing wastes generated at fixed points shall be handed over by medical institutions and disease control institutions to centralized medical waste disposal units for disposal.  Nucleic acid testing wastes generated at convenient and mobile sites shall be collected centrally by nucleic acid testing institutions or by other means specified by local governments and then transferred to centralized medical waste disposal units for disposal.

Practice has proved that a relatively complete and standardized medical waste collection, transport and disposal system has been basically established in every prefecture-level city divided into districts in China, and medical waste in remote areas can also be basically covered.  The existing centralized disposal and emergency disposal capacities of medical waste, including those of small and medium-sized cities, have withstood multiple rounds of COVID-19 tests and are fully capable of meeting the disposal needs of medical waste and nucleic acid testing waste.  The whole process of nucleic acid testing waste in all localities is under the supervision of relevant competent authorities such as health, ecological environment, transportation and urban management, which can effectively guarantee the proper disposal and controllable risk of nucleic acid testing waste.
