Director of the General Office of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Li Xiao Long introduced China's achievements in garbage sorting and rural waste management in the past decade.
At a press conference themed "China's Past Decade" held by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee on the same day, Jiang Wan Rong, vice minister of Housing and Urban-Rural development, said that the past decade has witnessed the accelerated transformation of China's urban development pattern and marked improvement in development quality, with cities being healthier, more secure and more livable. China is promoting inclusive, intensification and green development, and striving to explore a path of high-quality urban development with Chinese characteristics.
Over the past decade, urban functions have been improved, the living environment has been significantly improved, and the level of urban governance has been significantly raised. In 2021, China's urbanization rate of permanent residents reached 64.72%, with a built-up area of 62,000 square kilometers. The urban gas penetration rate was 98%, the water supply penetration rate was 99.4%, the urban green land rate was 38.7%, and the per capita green park area was 14.87 square meters.

A total of 163,000 old residential areas have been renovated, benefiting more than 28 million households. 297 cities at or above the prefecture level have implemented garbage sorting, covering 150 million households, and the urban living environment has been significantly improved. At the same time, the comprehensive carrying capacity of the city, the foundation for urban security development, and the urban work system and mechanism have all been steadily improved.
