  • The Four Paths for High-quality Innovation of Solid Waste Recycling Industry

    At the 16th Solid Waste Strategy Forum, Prof. Chuanbin Zhou from the Center for Ecological Environment Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphatically pointed out four paths for high-quality innovation of solid waste recycling technology.

    First, from pollution control to pollution reduction and carbon reduction.Kitchen waste is the largest source of carbon emission in domestic waste. Compared with landfill disposal, kitchen waste treatment technology has achieved carbon emission reduction, but the integrated process route of fine biological treatment of kitchen waste needs to be developed.

    Second, from recycling to recycling of high-quality resources. The recycling of solid waste is facing difficulties, and now only a few recyclable solid waste products are recycled through market rules. Take the takeaway lunch box as an example. The main material of takeaway lunch box is PP plastic, and the value of recycling is 8,500 yuan/ton, but the cost of lunch box for garbage disposal is about 300 yuan/ton.Therefore, it is a good idea to recycle the kitchen waste takeaway lunch box in a specific way.

    Third, from local performance to system evaluation optimization.  Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) originated in the United States and was adopted by Canada, the European Union, Japan and other places, providing a standardized process for evaluating the applicability of environmental technology. But the field of solid waste technology is the weak link of ETV verification.

    Fourth, from visualization to intelligent use of data. At present, most of the data in the field of solid waste disposal are only stored or displayed on the screen. Every city has the monitoring of waste components, but it lacks a complete database, and the waste components are the core parameters of the development of municipal waste treatment facilities and technical equipment. Specific to the level of kitchen waste, the parameters of kitchen waste fluctuate every day, but the output can be accurately controlled through the source information to provide support for technological innovation. In addition, the sixth China Total Diet Research(CTDS) was carried out. The food situation, various nutrients and pollutants in various provinces and cities have corresponding databases for inquiry.

    Generally speaking, the solid waste industry still needs the guidance of technological innovation, provides systematic solutions, has higher resource utilization requirements and reduces financial dependence; The key realization path lies in the above four aspects.
