  • 4th International Young Scientists Symposium on Waste Management and Disposal Technology is successfully organized in Kuala Lumpur

            4th International Young Scientists Symposium on Waste Management and Disposal Technology (IYSS 2023) was successfully organized in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. IYSS focused on the key issues in global waste management and disposal, attracting young scientists and graduate students from 6 countries. University of Malaya is organizer and Associate Prof. Fauziah Shahul Hamid is the chairman, supported by Indonesia of University, PMAS Arid Agriculture University, Thammasat University, Kasetsart University, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Zhejiang University of Technology, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute and Sunway University.

       During opening ceremony, two keynote addresses are presented with the topics on “Climate Entrepreneurship in the ESG Era” by Ts Paul Selvam Devadoss from Robin Paul Advisory PLT and “Perspective on Contaminated Land Management” by Mr. Tang Oh Tai from Shell Malaysia Limited, respectively, offering guidance for the future direction of waste management and disposal. Prof. Adi Surjosatyo, Prof. Azeem Khalid, Prof. Nurak Grisdanurak, Dr. Ekkachai Kanchanatip, and Dr. Meiti Pratiwi attended the event in site, as well as Prof. Mi Yan was online attended the opening ceremony.

    IYSS aimed to facilitate knowledge exchange in the field of waste management and disposal technology, while exploring innovative solutions to address the challenges. Attendees were divided into 6 groups for orderly participation in presentations, exhibitions, and discussions throughout the two-day event. IYSS 2023 covered a diverse range of topics, including waste management policies, microplastic distribution exploration, waste hydrothermal treatment technology, CO2 capturetechnology , and chemical synthesis technology. One of the highlights of the symposium was a series of significant presentations from various countries. Young scientists shared their scientific research findings, expressed their viewpoints, and engaged in discussions to address questions posed by other experts and young scientists, fostering mutual exchange of ideas. The presentations presented by these young scientists were comprehensive, addressing contemporary global energy and environmental issues with foresight, theoretical depth, and practical relevance. This forth brought a rich academic feast to the conference. In the culminating celebratory banquet, the recipient of the “Best Presenter” award was announced, awarded to the young scientist Rathika K from India. At the last day, experts and young scientists visited the “Landfill Park” to gain insights into waste landfill technology.

    Through the convening of IYSS 2023, young scientists did not only exchange knowledges and research experiences, but also strengthen the understandings and friendships.
