  • The closing ceremony of the 7th International Training Workshop of Waste to Energy was held successfully

On November 8, the 7th International Training Workshop on Waste to Energy (WtE) and the 5th International Symposium on Energy Utilization of Municipal Solid Waste for Sustainable Development of the City concluded with great success. Zhejiang University (ZJU) hosted the events, which were also jointly co-hosted by the Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT) and the International Consultant Committee on Waste to Energy (ICCWtE). The activities were sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The closing ceremony was chaired by Prof. Xiaodong Li from ZJU and co-chaired by Prof. Mi Yan from ZJUT.

During the 15-day training period, 35 participants from 20 developing nations – Bangladesh, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Thailand and Yemen – harvested a wealth of experience. The training courses included incineration technology and equipment, operation management, business model, avoidance of NIMBY issues, policies and regulations related to waste treatment and disposal, etc. Furthermore, innovative teaching modes were organized, such as the "Virtual Tour" of waste incineration plants. The workshop received great support from four leading waste-to-energy (WtE) enterprises in China that is, SUS Environment Co., Ltd., China Everbright Environment Group Limited, Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Co., Ltd. and China City Environment Protection Engineering Co., Ltd.

The ICCWtE members, including Prof. Agamutu Pariatamby from Sunway University, Malaysia; Prof. Mi Yan from ZJUT, China; Prof. Herri Susanto from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia; Prof. Mika Horttaainen from Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, Finland; Prof. Masaki Takaoka from Kyoto University, Japan; Assoc. Prof. Johann Fellner from Vienna University of Technology, Austria; Prof. Nurak Grisdanurak from Thammasat University, Thailand; Dr. Wichitra Singhirunnusorn from Mahasarakham University, Thailand; Prof. David Olukanni from Covenant University, Nigeria; and Prof. Md. Younus Mia from Stamford University Bangladesh, together with more than 10 WtERT members, attended the main activities of the workshop.

At the symposium, Prof. Nickolas J. Themelis (member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Founder of the Global WtERT Council, Prof. Emeritus of Columbia University, United States of America), and Prof. Huiyan Zhang (member of ICCWtE, Prof. of the Southeast University, China) provided wonderful keynote speeches titled The Development History and Sustainability Aspects of the WtE Technology and Thermochemical Conversion of Various Solid Wastes into High-quality Liquid Fuels, Carbon Materials and Syngas, respectively. Besides, 20 participants from different countries also made presentations related to waste management and treatment. All participants gave high recognition to this training and thought this workshop greatly helped them improve their scientific and technological abilities by learning Chinese experience and technology on waste-to-energy.

Since 2016, seven international training workshops on waste to energy have been successfully held. One hundred and eighty-six (186) participants from 34 developing countries in Asia, Africa, America, and Europe have been trained so far. Based on this training platform for international cooperation, the foreign trainees can have a deep understanding of the science and technology level of China. The long-term and intimate cooperation on science and technology between the developing countries is built, contributing to the realization of the rich cooperation achievements between China and different developing countries.
