  • The 8th International Training Workshop on Waste-to-Energy Concludes Successfully

On November 8, the 8th International Training Workshop on Waste-to-Energy and the 6th International Symposium on Energy Utilization of Municipal Solid Waste for Sustainable Development of City concluded with great success. Hosted by Zhejiang University (ZJU) and co-hosted by the Zhejiang University of Technology (ZJUT) and the International Consultant Committee on Waste-to-Energy (ICCWtE), the events brought together over 60 attendees, including organizers, international scholars, representatives from leading domestic WtE companies, and members of the Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT). The closing ceremony, chaired by Prof. Xiaodong Li of ZJU and co-chaired by Prof. Mi Yan of ZJUT, celebrated the achievements and insights shared throughout the event.

During the 15-day training, 20 participants from 15 developing countries—including Algeria, Cambodia, Egypt, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Peru, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, and Vietnam—gained invaluable experience in the field. The training curriculum covered topics such as incineration technology and equipment, operational management, business models, strategies for avoiding NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) issues, and policies and regulations related to waste treatment and disposal. Key ICCWtE members, including Prof. Mi Yan of ZJUT, China, and Prof. Herri Susanto from Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia, actively participated in the workshop’s main activities. Participants also conducted in-depth field studies to observe China’s advanced WtE technologies firsthand. This workshop received substantial support from five leading Waste-to-Energy enterprises in China: Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Co., Ltd., China Everbright Environment Group Ltd., Shanghai SUS Environment Co., Ltd., Beijing China Science Runyu Environmental Technology Co., Ltd., and Anhui Yuanchen Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd.

The symposium featured keynote speeches by Mr. Haiyun Xu (Chief Engineer of the China Urban Construction Institute), Prof. Agamuthu Pariatamby (Chair of ICCWtE and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences, Malaysia), and Mr. Reda M. Kabbaj (Vice President of WtERT). They delivered insightful talks on topics including Experience in the Development of Waste-to-Energy in China, Valorization Strategies for Solid Waste Management through Extended Producer Responsibility, and Global perspective on Policy Challenges and Regulatory Solutions. Additionally, the 20 participants presented their own research on waste management and treatment, with all attendees recognizing the workshop’s significant impact on enhancing their scientific and technological skills through exposure to China’s WtE experience and innovations.

Since its inception in 2016, eight international training workshops on waste-to-energy have been successfully conducted, benefiting 206 participants from 39 developing countries across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe. This platform for international cooperation has allowed trainees to gain a comprehensive understanding of China’s advancements in science and technology, fostering long-term and productive collaborations in waste-to-energy technology among China and developing countries worldwide.
