  • Uae's first green methanol production base starts construction

On February 3, the UAE Chemicals and Transition Fuels Centre (TA'ZIZ) announced the official start of construction of its methanol plant in Ruweis Industrial City, ABU Dhabi. The project will be the UAE's first methanol production base, with a planned annual capacity of 1.8 million tonnes of green methanol by 2028, all powered by clean energy.

It is reported that in addition to the production of methanol, the initial completion of the plant will produce soda, dichloroethane, vinyl chloride monomer, polyvinyl chloride, low-carbon ammonia, etc., with a total capacity of 4.7 million tons/year, many of which are still the first production in the UAE, will directly promote the upgrading of the country's industrial system. The methanol plant is powered by clean energy from the grid and is deeply aligned with the UAE's 2050 carbon neutrality target.

In addition to the production facilities, the project will also build a series of infrastructure, including dedicated chemical port and terminal facilities, as well as internal roads, security fences and buildings at the site. This infrastructure will ensure seamless and efficient transport of goods and provide the necessary power for planned manufacturing and industrial areas. The commissioning of the TA'ZIZ methanol plant is expected to change the pattern of chemical trade in the Middle East, and its 1.8 million tons of green methanol annual capacity can meet 12% of the global shipping industry's annual clean fuel demand, injecting new momentum into the UAE's industrial growth.

TA'ZIZ is a joint venture between ABU Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and local sovereign investment agency ADQ.
