World's first green ammonia fuel refuelling completed at Dalian Port

On 25 July, Sinopec China Ocean Shipping Fuel Supply Co., Ltd. completed the world's first green ship-to-ship ammonia fuel bunkering operation in Dalian City.

The Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration, Dalian Maritime Safety Administration, and other relevant authorities provided strong support to ensure the smooth progress of the green marine ammonia fuel bunkering operation. Sinopec Zhonghai Fuel Supply, Dalian COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, and Envision Technology Group jointly advanced the construction of the Dalian Northeast Asia Green Marine Fuel Bunkering Centre, marking a significant step forward.

The successful bunkering of green marine ammonia fuel has made Dalian Port the world's first port capable of bunkering alternative marine fuels such as biofuels, green methanol, LNG, and green ammonia fuel, filling the gap in the category of green ammonia fuel bunkering for ships.

The green ammonia used in this refuelling comes from the green hydrogen-ammonia project developed by Envision Technology Group at the Zero-Carbon Hydrogen Energy Industrial Park in Yuanbaoshan, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. It is a clean and efficient new type of ship fuel produced using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Its combustion products are primarily nitrogen and water, offering the significant advantage of zero carbon emissions, making it one of the key technological pathways for the shipping industry to achieve its ‘dual carbon’ goals.

The refuelling of green ammonia fuel is powered by 100% green electricity, establishing a fully green and low-carbon system from energy production to fuel preparation. With its outstanding carbon management capabilities across the entire lifecycle, it has obtained the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification. It is also the first green ammonia product globally to receive the Renewable Ammonia Certification from Bureau Veritas, with its environmental performance and sustainability recognised by international authoritative institutions. The large-scale application of this green ammonia fuel will provide the shipping industry with a zero-carbon emission solution, effectively driving the global shipping industry toward a low-carbon, environmentally friendly, and sustainable direction.
